Bear Bulletin for the Week of October 12-16, 2026

Week of October 12-16, 2026
October is Safety month at Robert Frost Elementary
On Thursday, October 15, we will conduct an earthquake drill in partnership with the nationwide event, The Great Shakeout. This drill will occur around 2:00 pm that day. If you would like more information about The Great Shakeout, or our drill procedures, please visit https://www.shakeout.org/.
Lockdown Drill
On Tuesday, October 27th we will continue to learn about safety at school by conducting our first lockdown drill of the school year. Yesterday, School Resource Officer Shawn Aljets with the Silverton Police Department visited our K-2 classrooms and prepared them for our upcoming drill. She will also be leading our drill that is scheduled for Wednesday, October 27th at 9:00 am. As a reminder, visitors will not be permitted to enter the school while we are conducting our drill.
Teachers have also been preparing our students by teaching them our Standard Response Protocol utilizing the “I Love You Guys” curriculum. If you would like more information about these lessons, the protocol, and school safety, please visit their website at I Love U Guys Foundation.
Yearbooks
Yearbooks can be purchased online via TreeRing. Information on how to do so was shared in the PTC’s Band app.
Softcover books are $17.61. Hardcover is an additional cost. You can get 10% off if you order by Oct. 31st!
Extra books can be purchased and donated to the school. Office staff distribute them to students who may have financial hardships.
Books for all 5th graders have been purchased (all 68 kids!). Total cost was $1,077.80.
Please use the Google Drive listed in the Band app to submit photos throughout the year. If you're volunteering in classrooms, ask the teacher if you can submit photos on their behalf so they have one less thing to do and can be in the photos, too!
Soon you'll see a post in the Band app asking for input on this year's yearbook theme.
If you have questions or want to send photos directly, email RobertFrostYearbookEditor@gmail.com.

Second Grade Literacy Focus
Our amazing 2nd Grade teaching team is continuing to strengthen students’ foundational reading skills this fall! A key area of focus will be the alphabetic principle and helping students make strong connections between what they see, hear, and write when reading.
What does this mean?
The alphabetic principle is understanding that letters and groups of letters represent sounds in spoken language. In 2nd grade, students continue to strengthen these connections so they can use their knowledge of letters and sounds to read words accurately, fluently, and confidently.
Our teachers will help students connect literacy skills in three important ways:
Visually – Students look closely at letters, spelling patterns, and words.
Auditorily – Students listen for and identify the sounds they hear in words.
Written – Students connect the sounds they hear to the letters and spelling patterns they write.
When students can make these connections, they become stronger at recognizing words, decoding unfamiliar words, spelling, and developing fluency while reading.
How Can Families Help at Home?
There are many simple ways to reinforce these skills:
Talk about sounds: Ask your child what sounds they hear at the beginning, middle, or end of a word.
Look closely at words: Point out interesting letter patterns or word parts while reading together.
Build and change words: Change one letter in a word and see how it changes the word (such as cat → cot → hot).
Practice spelling: Encourage your child to say the sounds in a word as they write it.
Read together every day: Have your child read aloud and talk about unfamiliar words they encounter.
Play word games: Try rhyming, word-building, or “How many words can you make with these letters?” games.
Encourage looking at all the letters: Remind your child to look carefully at the whole word rather than guessing based only on the first letter or picture.
Most importantly, keep reading fun and encouraging! Every opportunity to read, talk about words, listen for sounds, and write helps strengthen the connections students need to become confident, successful readers.
We are so proud of the work our 2nd Grade team is doing to strengthen these foundational skills and help our students grow as readers!
