Homecoming Parade
We are very excited for Silverton High School’s Homecoming Week next week! A huge thank you to our Parent Club and families for putting together our school’s float for the Homecoming parade on Friday, October 23rd. The theme for our float is “Canada”. Join us for a Float Decorating Party Thursday October 22nd @6pm at the front of the school
If your student would like to participate in the Homecoming parade, information was sent home today in student folders. There are a limited number of spots available on the float, so each classroom will be drawing 1 student from their class. If your student would like to ride the float, please make sure you return your child’s permission slip to school on Monday, October 19th. If your student is not drawn to ride on the float, they are welcome to walk behind the float as long as they WALK WITH A FAMILY MEMBER. Please don’t drop off kids to walk unless you will be walking with them.
***District Policy does NOT permit younger siblings to participate so please, Robert Frost students only!***

Please Keep Toys at Home
We would like to remind families that toys should stay at home and should not be brought to school. We understand that children have favorite toys they love to share and show their friends, but toys can sometimes become a distraction in the classroom and during learning activities.
Please take a moment to remind your child to leave their toys at home before coming to school. This helps us keep our classrooms focused on learning and prevents toys from getting lost, damaged, or becoming a source of conflict between students.
Thank you for your support and for helping us make Robert Frost Elementary a positive and productive learning environment for all our Bears!
Halloween Costume Guidelines
As Halloween approaches, we’re excited to let students participate in the fun by allowing them to wear costumes to school on Friday, October 30th. However, we want to ensure that all costumes are appropriate for our school environment and daily activities. Please note the following important guidelines to help your child enjoy the day safely and comfortably:
No blood, gore, or inappropriate imagery – Please avoid any costumes that include violent or frightening elements.
Costumes should be worn all day – Students should be able to wear their costumes comfortably throughout the school day, including in the classroom, at recess, and during PE.
No masks – Masks can obstruct vision and will not be allowed. Face paint is acceptable as long as it follows our guidelines.
No weapons or props – For safety reasons, no toy weapons or accessories (swords, wands, etc.) should be brought to school.
Costumes are worn at your own risk – With activities like recess, PE, and moving around the school, costumes may get a little dirty or damaged. Please keep this in mind when choosing a costume for your child.
Be able to participate in PE – Costumes should allow full participation in physical education, so please ensure they are easy to move in and won’t restrict movement.
No Blow Up Costumes - This is not something that has proven to work during the school day.
As a reminder, all costumes must follow the SFSD and Robert Frost dress code. We look forward to seeing the creative and fun costumes! Thank you for helping us make this a safe and enjoyable day for everyone.

Third Grade Literacy Focus
Our amazing 3rd Grade teaching team is helping students take the next step in their literacy journey this fall! A key focus will be strengthening students’ ability to write about what they read across a variety of text types.
What does this mean?
Students will be reading connected text—stories, informational texts, and other passages—and learning how to use what they read to develop thoughtful written responses.
Our 3rd Grade team will be teaching students to use a consistent graphic organizer and writing process that can be applied across different writing genres. Having a familiar structure helps students focus on their ideas and evidence rather than having to learn a completely new process for every type of writing.
Students will practice:
Reading closely – Thinking about and understanding what they read.
Thinking and responding – Identifying important ideas, details, and information from the text.
Organizing their thinking – Using a consistent graphic organizer to plan their writing.
Writing about what they read – Turning their thoughts and understanding into clear, organized written responses.
Using text evidence – Going back into the text to support their ideas and responses.
How Can Families Help at Home? You can support these skills through everyday reading and conversation:
Ask about what your child reads: “What was the most important part?” or “What makes you think that?”
Ask for evidence: “Where did you find that in the story/text?”
Have your child retell or summarize: Encourage them to explain what they read in their own words.
Talk about different types of texts: Compare a story, an informational book, or an article and discuss how they are different.
Encourage writing about reading: After reading, have your child write a few sentences about what they learned, their favorite part, or an important idea.
Use a simple beginning-middle-end or main idea/details organizer when your child is planning a response.
Most importantly, keep reading and talking together! When students regularly discuss what they read and put their thinking into writing, they build the skills they need to become confident readers, thinkers, and writers.
We are excited about the work our 3rd Grade team is doing to help students make meaningful connections between reading, thinking, and writing!
